What is the meaning of Cold Pressed? Learn about their benefits and learn the differences between two essential extraction methods.

Did you have the knowledge that ingredients for skincare can be cold-pressed and unrefined as you would your favorite green juice?

The term "cold press" refers to the process of extraction that is the process of extracting the oil out of seeds or fruits, and nuts without the use of solvents or chemicals and in a range of low to ambient temperatures. Chemical Extraction is a widely used method, let us check out how it works before we go into more details about Cold Pressed oils.

Chemical Extraction - Refined Oils

The majority of the oils we consume today are derived from a process known as Chemical Extraction.

In this technique, raw materials are cleansed using solvents or chemicals like hexane to extract the maximum amount of oil from them. The oil is heated to a high temperature to improve and make it marketable. Then it is distilled in order to remove any chemical solvents. It is bleached in order to remove impurities and then deodorized to get rid of the smell and color. It is then enriched with preservatives that will increase the shelf-life. The final oil we get is tasteless in taste, colorless and smell-less, although it isn't very healthy.

The refining process strips an oil's beneficial antioxidant and nutrients. Moreover, high temperatures can increase the number of free radicals that are harmful; and the additional threat of preservatives, additives, and extracting chemicals create a worse situation.

While applying heat to nuts and seeds as they are being press-pressed may increase the speed of the process and result in more oil, the drawback is that the heat could also degrade the nutritional value and diminish the flavor.

Cold Pressed Extraction - Mechanical Process

Cold-pressed oils, on the other hand, are extracted by an entirely different and straightforward technique.

It does not require the use of any chemical or high temperatures which can alter their chemical composition. They are produced through mechanical processes like expelling or pressing with no use of heat.

There is no heat to aids oils in staying in their natural , unchanged state. This means that the result is a high concentration of antioxidants, phenols, and fatty acids naturally found in seeds and plants.

According to Penn State University Extension and the study published in December 2018 published in The Ukrainian Food Journal, oil created using the cold-pressed extraction technique is believed to be more eco-friendly when compared to oils made using other methods. This is due to the fact that it does not require additional chemicals. Chemicals are commonly used to boost the amount in oil extracted by an oil plant.

In the same way, heat can degrade beneficial for your skin items like proteins , as well as the fats found in oils. Cold-pressing, however, keeps the quality of the skin-loving vitamins which include Omega 3, 6, and 9s.
